Has Your Business Outgrown Its Signage?

Your business has changed. Maybe you’ve expanded your services, updated your branding, moved into a larger space, or you’ve just grown beyond what you were a few years ago. But has your signage changed with it?

Your sign is usually one of the first things customers see. It tells people who you are, what you do, and where to find you. If your business has evolved but your signage hasn’t, your sign may not be serving your business the way it once did. Here are a few signs that your business has outgrown its signage.

  1. Your business offers more than your sign communicates.

Businesses change and grow. You may have added new products or services or expanded into new markets. Customers might not realize everything your business has to offer, so your sign should reflect the business today, not the business five or ten years ago.

  2. Your branding has changed.

A rebrand is more than updating your website and business cards. If your logo, colors, fonts, or overall brand identity has changed, your physical signage should reflect those changes too. Inconsistent branding can make your business appear disconnected or outdated.

If a customer sees your new branding online and arrives to find an old sign with a completely different look, they may be confused. Updating your signage helps create a consistent experience from social media all the way to your physical location. Your signage should look like it belongs to the same business that customers see everywhere else.

  3. Your sign is faded, worn, or looks outdated.

Your signage is part of your storefront and is your customer’s first impression of your business. If the sign looks old and neglected, customers may subconsciously associate that with the business itself. Faded graphics, damaged lettering, or rust can look unprofessional and make even an otherwise well-maintained property look shabby. A sign doesn’t necessarily have to be falling apart before it’s time for an update. If it no longer represents the quality of your business, it’s worth taking a closer look.

  4. Customers have trouble finding you.

If your business is located along a busy road, in a shopping center, behind another building, or somewhere with limited visibility, your signs have to work harder to get noticed. If customers have been calling for directions, your signage isn’t doing its job. Sometimes the solution isn’t just to replace your current sign with an even bigger sign. Making changes to placement, contrast, lighting, or adding complementary signage can improve the customer’s experience before they even walk through your doors.

  5. Your sign doesn’t match the size of your business anymore.

Maybe your business started in a small storefront with a simple sign, but now you’ve expanded. You have more services, more employees, more customers, a larger presence in the community, and maybe even a larger storefront, but your original sign remains. Your signage should have enough visual presence to represent the business you’ve built. A new location is an exciting milestone, but moving or expanding means your signage needs to change too. If you’ve opened a second location, moved into a larger building, or expanded your existing building, it’s a good opportunity to evaluate your entire signage system. Beyond your primary sign, customers might also need help finding entrances, parking, accessible entrances, or other important areas of your property.
